LIBRETTO – SYNOPSIS
Who Is Tomislav?
In the tenth century, as old worlds faded and new orders emerged, Tomislav rose onto the stage of history as the first King of the Croats. Victories, alliances, and titles speak his name, yet beneath them lies a silence in which legend and history have intertwined for centuries. Seas, mountains, and valleys remember a ruler who defended his land at the crossroads of East and West.
Sail Forth, Tomislav
From the stone fortresses of the Croatian hinterland, Tomislav sets out toward the sea. His path leads through Split and onward to Rome, where he pledges the loyalty of his sword to the Pope and assumes the role of protector of the Church. The Adriatic Sea—long coveted by conquerors—recognizes a new master. Bells ring, the people rejoice, and the ruler of the Croats embarks on a journey that will define a kingdom.
Prayer – Pater Noster
At the heart of power stands silence. Pater Noster reveals the spiritual foundation of Tomislav’s rule and his inner struggle before God, his people, and history. Authority is placed under divine order, and rule becomes responsibility.
The Battles of Tomislav – Dies irae
War arrives without mercy. Bulgarians and Hungarians test the borders of the Croatian land, yet Tomislav’s army stands firm—on mountains, plains, and at sea. Victory brings glory, but also grief. Amidst the thunder of battle, Dies irae resounds as a reminder of judgment, mortality, and the heavy cost of freedom borne by those who defend their land.
The Councils of Split – Te Deum
In Split, faith and politics converge. The Pope addresses Tomislav as his “beloved son,” seeking support in ecclesiastical matters, while the Croatian ruler strengthens his authority over the Dalmatian cities. At the tomb of Saint Domnius, Tomislav offers his vow—entrusting Croatia to God and placing the Church under his protection. Te Deum rises as thanksgiving, prayer, and covenant of a people.
Coronation
Tomislav is crowned in his own land. Though historical records are scarce, the moment is decisive: Croatia gains a king who skillfully balances between Byzantium and the Frankish realm, exploiting the weaknesses of two great empires. Tomislav emerges as a lasting figure of Croatian history—a symbol of endurance, strength, and political wisdom.
Gloria
The oratorio concludes in praise. Gloria lifts Tomislav from history into symbol—a ruler whose name transcends centuries. In divine glory and the song of the people, his legacy endures as a foundation of Croatian identity.
Put ga vodi u Split, a potom u Rim, gdje Papi obećava vjernost svoga mača i preuzima ulogu zaštitnika Crkve. Jadransko more – želja mnogih osvajača – prepoznaje novog gospodara. Zvona zvone, narod kliče, a vladar Hrvata polazi na put koji će obilježiti sudbinu kraljevstva.
Molitva – Pater Noster
U središtu moći stoji tišina. Pater Noster otkriva duhovni temelj Tomislavove vladavine i njegovu unutarnju borbu pred Bogom, narodom i poviješću. Vlast se podlaže božanskom poretku, a vladanje postaje odgovornost.
Tomislavove bitke – Dies irae
Rat dolazi neumoljivo.
Krunidba
Tomislav biva okrunjen u svojoj zemlji.
Gloria
Oratorij završava slavljenjem. Gloria uzdiže Tomislava iz povijesti u simbol – vladara čije ime nadilazi stoljeća. U Božjoj slavi i pjesmi naroda, njegovo nasljeđe ostaje upisano kao temelj hrvatskog identiteta.
